Ethiopia’s government released Merera Gudina, the chairman of an opposition party, among 115 political detainees freed on Wednesday, Fana Broadcasting Corp. reported.
Merera, the head of the Oromo Federalist Congress, urged the government to hold “honest negotiations with political forces that have massive support so as to create a democratic Ethiopia that accommodates all equally,” the state-owned broadcaster quoted him as saying. Merera described the government’s decision to release some prisoners as “a good beginning.”
