Slim pickings

Africa Confidential Vol 55 No 23 | 21 November 2014
Slim Riahi, a 42-year-old Bizerta-born businessman with British and Tunisian citizenship, is pitting himself against political heavyweight Béji Caïd Essebsi of Nidaa Tounus (Tunisian Call) in the first round of the presidential election on 23 November. Riahi amassed a fortune in oil, energy, aviation and property in Colonel Moammar el Gadaffi’s Libya. The size of the vote for each of the 27 candidates will have a strong impact on both parties’ negotiations after the results over forming coalitions.
